Political development in Nigeria from 1960 to Date.

In 1963 Nigeria became a republic.
In 1963 the mid-western region, now Edo and Delta states was created out of the old Western region. In 1966, January 15 first military coup in Nigeria. Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi Ironsi became Head of State and Commander in Chief.

July 29th 1966, Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi Ironsi was killed in the second military coup. Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon became Nigeria’s Head of State and Commander in Chief. 1967, Nigeria civil war started. May 27th 1967, General Gowon created twelve states in Nigeria. May 29th 1967, Lt Col. Ojukwu declared the Federal Republic of Biafra. January 12th 1970, Nigeria civil war ended. January 1st 1973, Nigeria changed to new currency– Naira and Kobo.

April 2nd 1973, Nigeria changed from left hand side drive to right hand side drive.
July 29th 1975, military coup. General Yakubu Gowon was ousted and late General Murtala Muhammed became Head of state and Commander-in-Chief. February 13th 1976,General Murtala Muhammed was assassinated by LT. Col. Bukar Suka Dimka in a military coup. February 14th 1976, General Olusegun Obasanjo became Head of State.

1976, General Obasanjo launched Operation Feed the Nation (O.F.N)
February 12th 1977, second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, was held in Nigeria. 1977, General Obasanjo became the first Nigerian Head of State to pay an official state visit to America. October 1st 1979, Alhaji Shehu Shagari became the first executive president of Nigeria. 1982, Pope John Paul 2 visited Nigeria.

1982, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu returned from exile.
October 1st 1983, Alhaji Shehu Shagari returned to power as president. December 31st 1983, President Shagari was over thrown in a military coup. January 1st 1984, Major General Muhammadu Buhari became the Head of State. 1984, War Against Indiscipline (WAI)was declared.

August 27th 1985, Major General Ibrahim Babangida toppled Major General Muhammadu Buhari in a military coup and became the Head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. 1986, Major General Ibrahim Babangida introduced Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP). October 1987, Babangida Administration created two more states. 1989, Babangida Administration created more Local government.

October 1989, Babangida’s government formed two political parties--- National Republican Convention(NRC) and Social Democratic Party(SDP). October 1991, Nine new states were created by the Babangida’s government. June , Presidential election was held but General Babangida annulled the election. August 26th 1993, General Babangida stepped aside and appointed Chief Ernest Shonekan to head Interim National Government.

November 17th 1993, Chief Ernest Shonekan resigned and General Sani Abacha became Military Head of State. October 1996, six more states were created by Abacha administration. June , The Head of State General Sani Abacha suddenly died in office. June , General Abdulsalami Abubakar became the new Head of State. July , Chief M.K.O Abiola, the presumed winner of June annulled election died in detention.

May 29th 1999, General Abdulsalami Abubakar handed over power to President Olusegun Obasanjo who won the fourth presidential election. 2003, President Olusegun Obasanjo was re-elected. 2007, President Umaru Yaradua elected president. December 2009, , President Umaru Yaradua was declared sick and taken to King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Jeddah Saudi-Arabia. February , Doctor Goodluck Jonathan was made Acting President. February , President Umaru Yaradua returns home.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan became president on May 29th 2010 to May 2015.
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari May 2015 to date and also the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria.
