Outline Introduction Space Data: Ionospheric Scintillation Geomagnetism Data Banks Challenges Recommendations Presentation by ESTHER HANSON Pre-ICRI Workshop, ICC, Cape Town, South Africa 10/02/2016
3
Introduction Data Sharing?
Making research data available to other investigators. Data Re-use??? To use data that is considered past its usefulness, again. Presentation by ESTHER HANSON Pre-ICRI Workshop, ICC, Cape Town, South Africa 10/02/2016
4
Data Sharing Outcomes? Optimal generation of scientific information.
Introduction (contd.) Data Sharing Outcomes? Optimal generation of scientific information. Enhanced Collaborative Learning Effective dissemination/communication of scientific information for improved living conditions for humanity. Presentation by ESTHER HANSON Pre-ICRI Workshop, ICC, Cape Town, South Africa 10/02/2016

Ionospheric Scintillation Activity in Africa unknown!
Scintillation: Rapid amplitude and phase fluctuation of radio signals in space due to turbulence. Scintillation affects radio signal up to few GHz frequency; seriously degrading and disrupting satellite-based navigation and communication systems. Fig 1: Hourly variation of radio wave amplitudes. Presentation by ESTHER HANSON Pre-ICRI Workshop, ICC, Cape Town, South Africa 10/02/2016
7
SCINDA SCINDA: Scintillation Network Decision Aid. Real-time, data-driven communication outage forecast and alert system hosted by AFRL, USA. SCINDA was designed to provide regional specification and short-term forecasts to operational users in real-time. SCINDA worked with IHY ( ) & ISWI (2009-present) to identify host nation partners & collaborators. Presentation by ESTHER HANSON Pre-ICRI Workshop, ICC, Cape Town, South Africa 10/02/2016
8
Equatorial Scintillation Sites
Network Coverage: Equatorial Stations in South America, Southwest Asia and Southeast Asia. Scintillation activity across Africa assumed high based on satellite observations, but ground-based measurements are needed (Groves et al., 2012). Presentation by ESTHER HANSON Pre-ICRI Workshop, ICC, Cape Town, South Africa 10/02/2016
9
