1 Packaging an item – Nets & Shapes
Yr 11 Mock GCSE revision: lesson 3 Packaging an item – Nets & Shapes Key words to remember: Surface Development Exploded Drawing Construction Lines Communication Learning objectives: Gain a better understanding of nets. Learning how to communicate and visualise 3D objects in a 2D form i.e. “Surface Development” Learning about “Exploded drawing” and how to use this to communicate and idea. What does an exploded drawing look like and why does it need construction lines?

2 Task 1: 5 senses -1 Learning objective:

Cylinder Square Based Pyramid Hexagonal Prism Cube

6 Things to remember about Nets?
Most packages start life as a surface development (net) A net is 2D which means we can only see two sides of its shape. Nets in industry are known as, “Surface Developments”. fold lines are dashed ( ) and cut lines are solid Sometimes glue areas on Tabs will be represented by circles Tabs are used to glue the faces of the net together. 3D means we can see 3 sides of the shape Height – Width - Thickness To know if you have the right net, count the faces. For example a cube has 6 sides (like a dice) so its net will have 6 faces. Remember, nets will be folded. So if you are going to write on the surface some of the words have to be written up side down or sideways so that when the net is folded, the information is the right way up.

7 Task 2: Translate the shape to a Surface Development

8 Learning objectives: Learning about “Exploded drawing” and how to use this to communicate and idea. What does an exploded drawing look like and why does it need construction lines?

10 Examples of Basic Nets

11 This is a surface development of a Pyramid
Create an Isometric drawing of the net in its 3D form. Render the shape to show where light is shining on it. This is a surface development of a Pyramid
