Abraham, Faith and Works Romans 4
4
Father Abraham Genesis 15:1-6 Abraham believed God God counted this as Righteousness Justified by Faith
5
The Contradiction? James 2:21-24 Abraham acted in accordance to God Justified by Works Ro 2:7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.
6
The Contradiction? James – Justified by Works not Faith
Paul – Justified by Faith not Works Ro 2:7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.

Understanding the Facts
Abraham’s faith was not “once and for all” - He believed and left his homeland (Gen. 12:1-4) - He believed and dwelt in tents (Gen. 13:17-18) - He believed and sacrificed (Gen. 15:1-6) - He believed and offered his son (Gen. 22) These events span 62 years! Ge 13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 18 Then Abram moved his tent…..
8
Understanding the Facts
Abraham’s faith was not “once and for all” Abraham’s faith had specific works - Hebrews 11: NOT the works of the Law of Moses - Sign of the covenant: circumcision (Gen. 17) - Circumcision was NOT a work of faith Ge 13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 18 Then Abram moved his tent…..
9
Understanding the Facts
Abraham’s faith was not “once and for all” Abraham’s faith had specific works Abraham’s works did not MERIT his gifts - His works CERTIFIED his faith - Without his works his faith was invalid Ge 13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 18 Then Abram moved his tent…..
10
Understanding the Facts
Abraham’s faith was not “once and for all” Abraham’s faith had specific works Abraham’s works did not MERIT his gifts Abraham’s faith justified before Moses’ Law - Conclusion: Justification is not by the Law Ge 13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 18 Then Abram moved his tent…..
11
The Agreement ONLY Of the Law of Moses
James – Abraham Justified by Works not Faith Paul – Abraham Justified by Faith not Works ONLY Ro 2:7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. Of the Law of Moses
12
The Agreement Paul and James:
Abraham was justified by faith with works, not of his believing by itself, and not the works of the Law of Moses. He did not “earn” his blessings, they were credited to him by his obedient Faith. Ro 2:7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.
13
The Father of Faith Abraham has become the father of faith Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. Galatians 3:7 Ge 13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 18 Then Abram moved his tent…..
14
The Father of Faith Hebrews 11:13-16 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Abraham has become the father of faith Abraham believed in a promise OUTSIDE this life Ge 13:17 "Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." 18 Then Abram moved his tent…..
15
The Main Point Moses Law cannot offer justification Yet justification existed before Moses Abraham was justified by obedient faith It is not the law but the obedient faith that saves Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
