2 Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
ESD allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future Education for Sustainable Development means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning: *climate change *disaster risk reduction *biodiversity *poverty reduction *sustainable consumption UNESCO is the lead agency for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development ( ). 3 RCE CONCEPT An RCE is a network of existing formal, non- formal and informal organisations facilitating learning towards sustainable development in local and regional communities A network of RCEs worldwide will constitute the Global Learning Space for Sustainable Development Annual Meeting RCE Greater Dhaka 2016

6 four goals of RCE: Re-orient education towards SD, covering existing programmes/subjects from the point of ESD and designing and integrate SD in curricula. Increase access to quality education that is most needed in the regional context; Deliver trainers’ training programmes and develop methodologies and learning materials for them; Lead advocacy and awareness-raising efforts in the public about the importance of educators and the essential role of ESD in achieving a sustainable future. RCEs promote the long-term goals of ESD, such as environmental stewardship, social justice, and improvement of the quality of life. Annual Meeting RCE Greater Dhaka 2016

7 Background of RCE Greater Dhaka
IUBAT has a 25 yrs of research on national and international issues specially Disaster Management of the Founder Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Alimullah Miyan This university is the United Nations nominated organization named as Regional Centre for Expertise, RCE Greater Dhaka for promoting ESD-Education for Sustainable Development in Bangladesh in 2011. This university received UN award for spreading Environmental Education in 2012,2013,2014 Annual Meeting RCE Greater Dhaka 2016

8 Global Action Programme ( GAP)
In 2013, the 37th session of the General Conference of UNESCO endorsed the GAP on ESD as the follow-up to the Decade (37 C/Resolution 12). UNESCO has now presented the Roadmap for Implementing the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD with its five priority areas of action: 1) advancing policy by mainstreaming ESD, 2) transforming learning and training environments using the whole-institution approach, 3)building capacities of educators and trainers, 4) empowering and mobilizing youth, and 5) accelerating sustainable solutions at the local level. 10 = 6000 Students have been trained in ESD
Faculty Initiative: Mandatory Environmental Science education course inclusion in undergraduate level Environmental Science and Sustainability is a Mandatory three(3) credit hours course in the University for all graduates Every Semester 500 students are trained for sustainability In last 12 semesters total (500*12) = 6000 Students have been trained in ESD Annual Meeting RCE Greater Dhaka 2016

A green campus is a healthy educational environment conducive to learning while saving energy, resources and money. 15 Biodiversity in the Campus
The campus was established in 2005 on a barren land. RCE Greater Dhaka started its biodiversity activities to introduce indigenous and exotic species The green campus has 86 varieties of tree species with a total number of 777 on an area of 2.6 hectares. Annual Meeting RCE Greater Dhaka 2016
