Jacob’s Flight Jacob went on his journey The people of the East
Lifted his feet – suggests light-footed or enthusiasm – as one might expect after God has confirmed He is with you. The people of the East Genesis 25 v 6 – Abraham sent his family eastwards East was where Moab, Amalek and Babylon were – enemies of Israel Going east was going away from the land of promise Jacob, as a type of Christ, went to gentiles to seek a bride He looked and saw a well in a field The well – source of life: living water The field – a picture of the world or humanity
4
Jacob’s Flight Three flocks
We are the sheep of His pasture (Psalm 103 v 3) Sheep represent humanity 3 flocks Descendants of Shem, Ham and Japheth All represented at the crucifixion – Jews, Romans and Simon of Cyrene All were waiting for refreshment from the well – for the time that the well would be opened A large stone was on the well’s mouth Matthew 27 v 60 Mark 16 v 4
5
Jacob’s Flight Would not move the stone until all were gathered Haran
Local agreement Language suggests they were prevented from removing the stone rather than that they were incapable Jesus said he would rise on the third day, so the tomb was sealed and all were prevented from moving it until after the third day Haran Mountainous Isaiah 2 v 1 – 5 Isaiah 52 v 7 Or dry A well in a dry place where the flock needed water.
6
Jacob’s Flight Laban son of Nahor
Laban was the son of Bethuel – grandson of Nahor. Laban – to become white in the sense of purified or sometimes in the sense of judgement (Joel 1 v 7) Nahor – charred, burned or scorched (always signifies judgement) Snorting or snort So, Jacob is looking for a son of judgement that has become white Rachel is coming Her name means ewe – a lamb or sheep Isaiah 53 v 7 uses this word to speak of Jesus as like a sheep before its shearers
7
Jacob’s Flight The Lamb was a shepherd to the sheep
Much is made of Laban being ‘his mother’s brother’ Brother can also be translated ‘relative’ or ‘kinsman’ This, taken with Laban saying, “You my bone and my flesh” provides a link back to Adam where this kind of phrase was first used. These were the flocks of Jacob’s kinsmen and the female descent line is being drawn to our attention – culturally abnormal Rabbis believe that this speaks of the unity of all humanity (the sheep) in the sin of Adam Jacob is a type of Jesus, who was born of a woman. Rachel arrived with the fourth flock The flock of the lamb
8
Jacob’s Flight The stone is rolled away for the flock of the lamb
Against the agreement that prevented it from being moved Just as it was on the day of resurrection As far as we can tell it is only the flock of the lamb that are allowed to drink Jacob – the type of Christ – removed the stone for the flock of the lamb The flock of the son from judgement who had become white The fourth flock – not the natural 3 but the supernatural 1
9
Jacob’s Flight Kissed Rachel Explained that he was a kinsman
Jesus had to be a kinsman to redeem us He had to be related to us but without our legacy of sin He stayed a month It was culturally acceptable to stay up to a month as a guest Beyond this it was expected that you would work or pay for your keep Next time we come to Genesis we will see what he did for work Meanwhile we praise Him that the great stone was rolled away
