Ways to purchase Office 2016
Full Packaged Product (FPP) OEM Volume Licensing Purchased from Retailers, MSFT, and resellers Preinstalled on a PC Acquired through Microsoft or Resellers Product use rights govern how products may be used and these vary by product, product version, AND by the channel through which the license was purchased. Narration There are three key ways to buy a Microsoft Office 2016 license depending on the volume of licenses your customers need. The full packaged product, or FPP, is purchased from retailers, Microsoft, and resellers like Dell. Typically one box contains one license. An OEM, or Original equipment manufacturer license, comes preinstalled on a new computer and the software is associated with the device. Volume Licensing agreements are purchased directly from Microsoft or through resellers like Dell and there are a variety of agreements to suit different types of organizations. How the products may be used are outlined in Product use rights which vary by product, product version, AND by the channel through which the license is acquired. Let’s look at these a little more in detail.

Office OEM- Direct sales motion OEM PC Office attach requires Office pre-installation/bundling to a specific device before leaving Dell’s facilities Dell Initial Office and PC bundled together + Customers ROK Distribution is optimized for convenience for OEMs, Distributors and Resellers. OEMs first determine the hardware and software for ROK. They make those available for their OEM Distributors to order. They BIOS Lock the ROK Media to their OEM Hardware. A distributor can stock Hardware and ROK kits separately. They can also distribute ROK Kits and Hardware separately to resellers. Resellers may order ROK Kits together or separately. They can also order from more than one Distributor. They can stock what makes sense for their customers. Resellers however, MUST distribute the ROK Kit with the Hardware to the Customer.

Disti Sales Scenario Disti XYZ purchases 100 PCs and expects to sell 30 with Office H&B; the Disti can: At the time the Disti places the order from Dell, it must select which specific devices will have the 30 OEM Office pre-installed; Office OEM attach must happen prior to the PC leaving Dell’s possessions. The Disti can’t mix and match Office OEM licenses based on reseller/customers orders. Alternatively, if the Disti will like to mix and match devices with Office, the Disti will need to purchase 30 FPP Office licenses (not OEM) and assigned after Reseller places the order Question feedback: Correct answer: Correct! The Office Home & Student 2016 license is a one-time license. Incorrect answer: Incorrect. Try again. Note to DEV Correct answer in bold.

AFOLB: Known Issues
10
Known Issue #1: Office H&S default Office suite activated, despite user purchased H&B or Pro
Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote will be the only apps immediately available for use on all new PCs using the Office Pre-installation Kit currently used by Dell Fix: Activation other Office 2016 SKUs, such as H&B and Pro, Office Click to Run automatically will update Office at the earliest opportunity to install the missing apps (e.g., Outlook, Access and Publisher). The upgrade SKU requires an internet connection and must complete within 5 days for continued use of the pre-installed app features. If the 5 days have passed without applying the change, the Office Click to Run client will inform the user that an Office update is required. Dell will switch production Office bits by mid-March with final fix
11
Known Issue #2: User unable to activate Office AFOLB after reimaging device to Win 10 (not thru a VL Windows Activation) For customers who reimage the device with Win 10 (not Win 7 or if the reimaged machine activated with a Win 10 VL key) Fix: MS Support published an article that explains the reasons and includes a troubleshooter that automatically verifies that Office licensed linked to the Windows key on the device. Link to Support article – link
12
Known Issue #3: User purchased Office OEM AFOLB device but intends to downgrade to Win 7 or reimage to Win 10 VL For this scenario is critical that User activates Office 2016 AFOLB prior to downgrading and links to the MSA account Fix: Before you re-image your system the user must: First, activate your Windows Live ID and activate your Office with your Microsoft account (MSA). Then, once the Office license is tied to the MSA, then the device can be re-imaged. Finally, once the re-image is complete, sign in to the MSA and reinstall Office.
