Around 1000 BC the strongest people living in Canaan were the Philistines, not the Israelites.

Philistines knew how to make iron weapons and tools and had strong cities

Israelites believed that if they had a king it would unite the tribes of Israel to fight the Philistines

King Saul Around 1020 BC the Israelites asked Samuel a prophet and judge to choose a king Prophet- A person who the Israelites thought was instructed by God.

King Saul Samuel Warned that a king would tax the Israelites and make them slaves. Israelites still wanted a king, so Saul a warrior- Farmer was chosen, a young Benjaminite

According to the Hebrew Bible He chose another King and Instructed Samuel to anoint him in Secret. The new King would be a young shepherd named David

King David During David’s youth, he worked in Saul’s court
David was known for fighting the philistines many times

King David His most famous battle was that against the giant Philistine Goliath Young David killed him on the spot, then Saul put David in Charge of the army

King David As David’s victories grew, Saul became jealous of David and plotted to kill him. David hid out in enemy territory until Saul and his 3 sons were killed in battle.

King David Once in power King David created an empire and people had to pay tribute to David. Empire- A nation that rules several other nations Tribute- Money or slaves given to a stronger ruler

King David David made the Israelites pay in order to expand Juda’s capital Jerusalem David wanted a temple there so that the Israelite’s sacred objects would have a permanent home. David never saw the temple. 3-2A

King Solomon Upon David’s death, Solomon, David’s son, became king.
Solomon finished the temple in Jerusalem

King Solomon Solomon was known for his proverbs Proverbs- Wise sayings
Many Israelites disliked his rule because of his high taxes people paid for his buildings.

King Solomon Israelites in the north were unhappy with Solomon
He forced them to work in mines in nearby countries to get more money.
