1 Name 5 foods that have carbohydrates in them.
Must wear uniforms/IDs! 10/3/16 EBHS Admit Slip Name 5 foods that have carbohydrates in them. Date: 10/3/16 Topic: Carbs Day 2 Page # ___

2 Friday’s Food Lab What did you test for? What did you find?
Any surprises? How might the natural color of the food impact the results? Think: Oreo

3 Food lab review… Did we test for all the sugars that exist?
Is it possible that a food (ex. strawberry) came up with no glucose/fructose/sucrose/starch, but still have sugar? How do we know if a word is a sugar? There are LOTS more sugars we didn’t test for. Everything living needs sugar for energy.

4 Carbohydrates* Words that come to mind?

5 “Sugar of Life” Let’s count how many of each element there are…

6 Glucose* Monosaccharide (one sugar ring)  Simple sugar
Provides energy to the body Formula:

7 Types of Energy* Energy from carbs? = Quick!
Energy from fats (lipids)? = Long term! Energy from protein? = Stored in muscle; mostly used for structure; don’t want to break down for energy

8 AS: Anorexia Nervosa

9 If you stop eating… What happens?
No carbs entering body… Body still needs energy to survive! -Breaks down fat Fat all gone? Body still needs energy! -Breaks down proteins that make up muscles ^^Very dangerous!

10 Energy Order Breakdown*
1) Carbs (from eating) 2) Lipids (from stored fat) 3) Protein (from muscles)

11 If you OVER eat… What happens?
1) Carbs are used for immediate energy when you eat 2) Too many carbs, first stored as glycogen in humans (stored in muscles)* ^^Good for working out! 3) Even more carbs, then the sugar is turned into body fat*

12 Sugar Lingo* Starch = long sugar molecule made of many glucose (polysaccharide) Energy storage in plants Glycogen = long sugar molecule made of many glucose (polysaccharide) Energy storage in humans Cellulose = long sugar molecule made of many glucose (polysaccharide)

13 Carb MCAS Practice Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, & Nucleic acids are known as “Organic Molecules”  ??? Also called the “Biomolecules” Carb = Sugar = Saccharide (Mono = small = glucose & Poly = large = starch) = Quick energy
