1 Results of the DIOMIS project
- Opportunities and threats for combined transport in Slovakia - „Infrastructure of intermodal transport“ Conference 2010 Bratislava

2 Combined Transport in Slovakia
Presentation DIOMIS Module 3 Background Objectives Combined Transport in Slovakia Assessment of the development by 2015/2020 Assessment of Impact on Rail Infrastructure and CT Terminals Capacity Evaluation of Opportunities and Threats

3 Infrastructure enlargement investments
Domestic & international CT trains : 2015 Rail network load (all ongoing & planned investments implemented) Let’s start with a reminder: We saw that CT is highly concentrated on important transeuropean axes. Of course this is not the only traffic operating on these axis: When superposing CT with conventional rail freight and passenger one can see that on these axis in 2015 considerable bottlenecks will remain. And this is even more critical since we assumed that all planned and ongoing enlargement investments will be under operation, which is –of course- challenging not to say physically impossible. So in reality the picture will be even worse. In addition to that we assumed a 20% growth of productivity, which can be translated into a 20% gain of capacity per link I will show you with the following example that every single bottleneck is not a regional, or national but a European problem… With the DIOMIS database it is possible to show for each section of a network, where the trains crossing this section come from and go to… Let’s have as an example a closer look on the Basel area, and I will show you, why we can really speak of achilles’ heels

New EU Member States – Slovakia - Terminal handling capacity currently available and required in 2020 Total handling capacity available in 2007 (million gross tonnes) 5.2 Total CT volume (without transit) (TEU) 294,715 total CT volume (without transit) 2.7 Use of capacity (%) 52 Handling capacity required in 2020 7.2 Use of capacity in 2020 disregarding capacity extensions 138 Capacity required in 2020 disregarding capacity extensions 2.0 (Source: ZSSK cargo)

Future CT Terminals Žilina Zvolen ? Kosiče Bratislava district Dunajska Streda (existing) Sladkovicovo (existing) Dobrá (existing) Bratislava Pálenisko (existing) Bratislava UNS (existing)

14 Opportunities Geo-economic situation Export and import driven market
Turntable between North Sea/Baltic Sea ports and Mediterranean/Black Sea ports “Bridgehead” to Ukraine, Russia ( China) Export and import driven market Exponential growth within the last decade Economical growth requires sophisticated logistic solutions Ongoing growth of foreign investments, in the long run (>2015) also in the eastern parts of Slovakia pre-requisite for point-to-point intermodal (Gateway) services

15 Threats Concentration of the western part Monostructure
Maritime market Automotive industry (With one exception) relatively outdated terminal infrastructure Generally no open access to terminals Strong competition to road transport Highest infrastructure access fees in Europe

16 Which lessons can be drawn?
Adjustment of infrastructure fees on a European level Development of a continental market Development of a “domestic” market (central hub or Gateway) Open access to terminals Development of turntable services
