Semi-Permeable Membrane
The membrane is ____________ Things like sugars, fats, proteins, oxygen, water, salt and wastes can get through Along with the phospholipids, there are many proteins and carbohydrates

The function of the cell membrane is to separate the inside of the cell from the outside while letting certain substance in and out. This is called cell membrane transport ____________

Keeping the water balance
There are three different situations where water is moving into and out of cells

Hypotonic Solution ____________
Water enters the cell by osmosis and the cell tends to swell Example: A blood cell of a salt water fish in fresh water high concentration of water around cell compared to inside problem: cells gain water, swells & can burst This is why salt water fish can’t live in fresh water

Hypertonic Solution ____________
Example: A blood cell of a fresh water fish in salt water low concentration of water around cell problem: cell loses water Why fresh water fish can’t live in salt water

Isotonic Solution Balanced conditions ___________ example: blood
problem: none volume of cell doesn’t change
