There are 15 poems in the anthology that you need to know REALLY well. Answer one question on the poetry cluster you have studied from the Anthology Section B – Poetry You will not have a choice of questions – which is why it is so important that you know the poems well. Poem 6 – EXPOSURE– Wilfred Owen Wilfred Owen wrote ‘Exposure’ in from the trenches of World War One, not long before he was killed in battle. Much of Owen’s poetry reveals his anger at the war’s waste of life and its horrific conditions. What can you tell me about the conditions in WWI? Our brains ache, in the merciless iced east winds that knive us . . .  Wearied we keep awake because the night is silent . . . Low drooping flares confuse our memory of the salient . . . Worried by silence, sentries whisper, curious, nervous, But nothing happens.  Watching, we hear the mad gusts tugging on the wire, Like twitching agonies of men among its brambles. Northward, incessantly, the flickering gunnery rumbles, Far off, like a dull rumour of some other war.         What are we doing here? The poignant misery of dawn begins to grow . . . We only know war lasts, rain soaks, and clouds sag stormy. Dawn massing in the east her melancholy army Attacks once more in ranks on shivering ranks of grey, But nothing happens. Sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence. Less deadly than the air that shudders black with snow, With sidelong flowing flakes that flock, pause, and renew, We watch them wandering up and down the wind's nonchalance, But nothing happens. Pale flakes with fingering stealth come feeling for our faces— We cringe in holes, back on forgotten dreams, and stare, snow-dazed, Deep into grassier ditches. So we drowse, sun-dozed, Littered with blossoms trickling where the blackbird fusses.  —Is it that we are dying? Slowly our ghosts drag home: glimpsing the sunk fires, glozed With crusted dark-red jewels; crickets jingle there; For hours the innocent mice rejoice: the house is theirs; Shutters and doors, all closed: on us the doors are closed,— We turn back to our dying. Look at the Narrative Voice - whether it’s written in the first person (I), second person (you) or third person (he/she). Think about who the poem is addressing (eg; the narrator’s lover, the reader etc). How does the ‘story’ of the poem evolve? How does the tone change? A SUMMARY – Soldiers in the trenches of WWI are awake at night, afraid of an enemy attack. However, nature seems to be the main enemy – it’s freezing cold, windy and snowing. The men imagine returning home, but the doors there are closed to them. They believe that sacrificing themselves in the war is the only way of keeping their loved ones at home safe. They return to thinking about the deaths in the bleak, icy trenches. Worried by silence, sentries whisper, curious, nervous, But nothing happens.  Watching, we hear the mad gusts tugging on the wire, Like twitching agonies of men among its brambles. Northward, incessantly, the flickering gunnery rumbles, Far off, like a dull rumour of some other war.         What are we doing here? The poignant misery of dawn begins to grow . . . We only know war lasts, rain soaks, and clouds sag stormy. Dawn massing in the east her melancholy army Attacks once more in ranks on shivering ranks of grey, But nothing happens. Ellipses hint that they’re waiting for something to happen….it never does! Lots of different emotions -another reason why their brains hurt. Short simple half line emphasises their boredom and tension. The “brambles” of the barbed wire remind us of the pain caused by nature. Assonance and onomatopoeia create a vivid aural description. This is a biblical reference to Matthew 24:6, where Jesus foretells the end of the world. He says “you will hear of wars and rumours of wars”. Rhetorical question asks what the point of it all is. Dawn is personified using the language of battle. Normally dawn brings hope, but not here. The description of dawn approaching mirrors the soldiers in the trenches. No colour -the battlefield is cold and lifeless. Grey was also the colour of German uniforms, so this aligns nature with the enemy. Pale flakes with fingering stealth come feeling for our faces— We cringe in holes, back on forgotten dreams, and stare, snow-dazed, Deep into grassier ditches. So we drowse, sun-dozed, Littered with blossoms trickling where the blackbird fusses.  —Is it that we are dying? Slowly our ghosts drag home: glimpsing the sunk fires, glozed With crusted dark-red jewels; crickets jingle there; For hours the innocent mice rejoice: the house is theirs; Shutters and doors, all closed: on us the doors are closed,— We turn back to our dying. Snow is normally white (symbolising purity), but here it’s black (symbolising death or evil) Alliteration emphasises the relentlessness of the snow The snowflakes are personified – they’re maliciously seeking the men’s faces. Half-rhyme creates a link between their current situation and their dreams of the past. Another question, possibly answering the first question – they’re here to die. Assonance of long ‘oh’ sounds makes the imagined journey sound painful and slow. This also reflects the soldiers’ concern that people back home were losing interest in their fate as the war dragged on. Final stanza ends in the same way as first stanza, suggesting that even death doesn’t change anything. FORM AND STRUCTURE The poem’s written in the present tense using the first person plural (“our”, “we” and “us”). This collective voice shows how the experience was shared by soldiers across the war. Each stanza has a regular rhyme scheme (ABBAC) reflecting the monotonous nature of the men’s experience, but the rhymes are often half rhymes (eg “snow” and “renew”. The rhyme scheme offers no comfort or satisfaction – the rhymes are jagged like the reality of the men’s experience and reflect their confusion and fading energy. Each stanza ends with a half line, leaving a gap which mirrors the lack of activity or hope for the men. The poem has eight stanzas, but there’s no real progression – the last stanza ends with the same words as the first, reflecting the monotony of life in the trenches and the absence of change. LANGUAGE Questions – The poem uses rhetorical questions to ask why the men are exposed to such dreadful conditions, and whether there’s any point to their suffering. Bleak Language – the poem includes lots of bleak imagery to remind the reader of the men’s pain, the awful weather and the lack of hope for the soldiers. Assonance, onomatopoeia and carefully chosen verbs add to the bleak mood and make the descriptions vivid and distressing. Personification – Nature is repeatedly personified, making it seem the real enemy in the war. FEELINGS AND ATTITUDES SUFFERING– There are reminders of the real, physical pain that the soldiers experience, as well as their exhaustion and fatigue. Even thinking about home is painful for the men as they’re not welcome there. BOREDOM – There’s a sense of frustration at their situation – they are “worried”, “watching” and waiting, but “nothing happens” and the men are left to contemplate their own deaths. HOPELESSNESS– The soldiers are helpless against the power of nature and there is nothing they can do to change their situation. The poem offers little hope of a future for the men.
