Injuries claim the lives of 15,866 Canadians each year 5,785 lives lost each year in Ontario alone Many injuries are preventable In 2011, there would have been 200,000 fewer injuries due to leisure, recreation or other non-work related activities in Ontario

1 Dollar spent on: Produces savings of; Bicycle helmets $ 29 Child safety seats $ 32 Road safety improvements $ 3 Counseling by paediatricians $ 10 Poison control services $ 7

4 Annual cost of injury in Ontario
$ 8.8 billion total costs (direct and indirect) $ 667 dollars per capita 1 injury-related emergency room visit for 10 people (1.4 million visits total) Over 20,000 permanent total and partial disabilities

5,785 total injury deaths Leading causes of death: falls, suicide/self- harm, transport incidents Nearly 10% of all deaths in the province Injury deaths rank 3rd after cancer and heart disease
