2 Upper class marriage expectations
People in upper class would only marry others in the upper class to maintain social status Marriage was used for financial security Love was rarely involved in a marriage

3 Summary The man would receive a dowry (money) from his wife when they marry Once a couple is married all the wife's property and belongings belong to the husband The choice of spouse had more to do with financial status than anything else Women stay home to cook, clean and look after the children while the men went to work

4 Connections to great expectations
Pip couldn’t be with Estella because he was common and would bring her family's reputation down. Pip wanted to become a gentleman so he could marry and win Estella's affection. Now that Pip has become a gentleman Estella wants to see him.

5 Question Time! Why was it frowned upon for upper class people to marry lower class people? What happened after a man married a women? What was the biggest influence of choosing a marriage partner?
