LO 51: Report on notable trees. Finn showed me the old Farey Oak
How did it all start? LO 51: Report on notable trees. Finn showed me the old Farey Oak Looking at the site of the village of Lamport Discussed ideas with Patrick and came up with a plan
4
The plan There were aspects to consider and achieve: New Audience Lasting legacy Put learned skills into practice New for the property Attainable
5
VE KPI, increase members
New Audience MI dashborad…arghh!! VE KPI, increase members Drivers Emotional Impact! Live Life To The Full Target audience Research Guidebook
6
New, innovative and lasting
Parkland based as opposed to gardens Outside pay barrier but still commercially viable: -Parking -Café -Shop Permanent fixture Easy to maintain (especially now I’m permanent!) Interpretation
7
Putting skills into practice
Variety.. Machinery Hard Landscaping Marketing and promotion Understanding volunteer segmentation Project Management Working with volunteers Creating outdoor trails Working with people in and out of NT
8
Attainable ???

What next?

challenges Convince Barry! (Sponsor) Iron out creases with Patrick (Client) Obtain Client Brief Create Business Case (Project manager) GANTT charts galore Budgets SMART objectives….

To replace the fencing around the Faery Oak tree by February 2015
SMART objectives To replace the fencing around the Faery Oak tree by February 2015 To install 5 new benches along the trail, with engraved words, by March 2015 To improve the public access along the trail by mowing the paths, cutting back overgrown trees and hedges, and installing waymarkers consisting of slate signs attached to pitchforks, by March 2015. To replace the 12ft gate at the start of the trail by January 2015. To research the history of the area and create and print a guidebook aimed at the Live Life To the Full visitor segment, by February 2015.
12
Aims and success The project will: Be completed by the end of March 2015 Be delivered for £800 (?) Have supporting literature interpreted in a suitable way Be delivered to the schedule that sets out the dates on which the key milestones will be achieved.
13
Processes I will need to: -Visit Alex Moir at the Cleft Oak fencing company to discuss fencing as this is the type of fencing I would like to use -Work with the volunteer who engraves wood to discuss engraving the benches that will be placed along the trail -Job shadow/learn how to install fencing and gates. There are 2 volunteers at Stowe who can help with this, as I need to do this for the project. -Visit Packwood House to look at Spirit of Place and interpretation to give me ideas of how best to use this for my trail. -Meet with Richard Jackson (rural surveyor) to establish clear boundaries of land ownership, public access and rights of way. -Meet with Gary Marshall (archaeologist) to find out about the history of the land, in particular boundaries and old trees
14
Putting it in to practice
15
Bycell Riding is an iconic part of the route
Planning the route Bycell Riding is an iconic part of the route
16
Considerations Uses Chris Whitehead’s land (tenant farmer) Discussions with Richard Jackson (Rural Surveyor) Asset Exchange Already public access down there Accessibility – need to make this clear Is it interesting? Can it link into Lamport Garden?
17
Staff and volunteers all helped out with the fencing
19
Farey Oak’s Cleft oak! Used around Stowe already – consistency In keeping with Spirit of Place Fits the style of the project The benches are also made of oak Cost – kept it down by installing in house and it put a new skill into practice Worked with the tenant farmer Team installation day!
20
One of the benches installed behind the Farey Oak
21
The National Trust Oak leaf logo is engraved at each end of every bench.
Font was carefully considered from a selection of options “The ancient Faery Oak is over 600 years old” “Lamport was first recorded in 1086 Domesday Book”
22
Why? What? How? Natural way of getting interpretation across Placing and research Sourcing materials Oak - consistency Working with Richard Mercer Ratchet Strap 101!!
23
The guidebook An aerial photo of the Lamport site shows evidence of where the town was
24
What? Why? How? An important part of appealing to the new visitor segment: -LLTTF like….. Extensive research! Archives, volunteers, historical records, archaeologist reports Meeting with Richard Wheeler Filtering – personal, emotional connection and impact Consistent with Stowe and NT brand Interpretation
25
Volunteers helping with the tidy up
Tidy and polish Volunteers helping with the tidy up
26
Evaluation
27
What went well? Fencing Benches – style and interpretation Emotional Impact Spirit of Place Clearing area and making it accessible, keeping parkland style Budget
28
What could have been better?
Lasting legacy – golf course Timings! 12ft gate at the start of trail Waymarkers Access
29
Learning for the future
Allow extra time for everything! Be flexible and have a back up – things don’t always go to plan Communication needs to be frequent amongst all involved
30
Alex Moir (Handmade Cleft Oak Company) –
feedback Alex Moir (Handmade Cleft Oak Company) – “We walked the dog up that way at the weekend and it was great to see a fantastic job of the cleft fencing” Chris Whitehead (tenant farmer) – “good job of the tree cages” Patrick Green (client and line manager)– “The cleft fencing fits the landscape perfectly”
31
Put learned skills into practice
conclusion Initial HLF criteria: New Audience Lasting legacy Put learned skills into practice New for the property Attainable Also a good lesson – first time doing anything like this Things have been up and down throughout the project but overall we have achieved what we set out to do Should start to see the difference in feedback i.e surveys, comment cards and Trip Advisor.
