1 Types of Chemical Reactions

2 Main Ideas Synthesis Reactions Decomposition Reactions
Single Replacement Reactions Double Replacement Reactions Combustion Reactions Signs of a chemical change (rxns)? Gas release, temperature change, color change (by itself), light, precipitate (more shall be revealed!) Note: We will do a demo of each…you might want to leave room to make notes of the demos!

3 element + element → compound
Synthesis Reaction 2 things combine to be 1 thing A + B → AB element + element → compound Ex: Mg + O2 → MgO

4 2. Decomposition Reaction
1 thing separates to become 2 things AB → A + B compound → element + element Ex: H2O → H2 + O2 or H2O2 catalyst H2O + O2

5 3. Single Replacement/ Displacement Reaction
“Mean Girl Scenario” A + BC → AC + B element + compound → compound + element Ex: Al + CuCl2 → AlCl3 + Cu Any signs of chemical reactions?

6 4. Double Replacement/ Displacement Reaction
AB + CD → AD + CB compound + compound → compound + compound

7 4. Double Replacement/ Displacement Reaction
AB + CD → AD + CB compound + compound → compound + compound Ex: Na2CO3 + CuSO4 → CuCO3 + Na2SO4 Note: Double Replacement reactions usually form a precipitate (a solid that is created by the reaction of two liquids)

8 carbon-hydrogen + oxygen → water + carbon dioxide
5. Combustion Reaction Always produces water and carbon dioxide CXHY + O2 → H2O + CO2 carbon-hydrogen + oxygen → water + carbon dioxide Ex: CH4 + O2 → H2O + CO2 OR C3H8 + O2 → H2O + CO2

9 The End  Take this time to create a summary at the bottom of your notes and place it in your binder!
