6 Science Says Wine Aged in French Oak May Protect Your Liver
Scientists have found once again that wine may in fact be the answer to all of life’s problems. A new study found that French oak, a tree commonly used for barrel aging wine, contains a tannin that heals your liver. French barrel aged wine could be protecting your liver, even as you consume alcohol. The tannin, called roburin, is found in both species of French oak, Quercus robur and Quercus petraea, and it can improve liver function while decreasing fatigue and nausea.

9 Konstantin Frank Born July 4, 1899 in Odessa Ukraine. He was 1 of 10 children in which only 5 survived. 4th generation of Germans to settle in the area His father was manager of Ukrainian R.R. and acquired large land holding and raised livestock and vineyards. His father married into a wealthy Polish merchant family with ties to the Czar. KF started to work in the vineyards at 12 and made his first wine at 15. Phylloxera destroyed the vineyard in 1906. KF received his PHD in 1930, and was assigned to a 30,000 acre collective farm. He rebuilt the vineyards by grafting the vines to resistant restock. Also invented 2 new plows. KF’s research at the collective made him a model “absent minded” professor.

10 WW II had a major impact on the family. Ethnic Germans were deported.
Coming To America WW II had a major impact on the family. Ethnic Germans were deported. In 1944 with the Russians approaching KF and the family left the Ukraine. Stalin had the family named “non persons”. Fled to Austria and then to Bavaria where he found work managing a farm. Worked for US for 8 years before deciding he must move the family to America, where he wanted to pursue his experiments and teach. Under the Displaced Persons Act of 1948 he was able to find a sponsor to move the family to NY in 1951. KF sees the US as the embodiment of hope and promise. He can only find work as a dishwasher. Applied to the Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva. Despite having a PHD he could only secure a laborer position. Was at odds with management over growing Vitis Vinifera.

11 The Birth of AWS America had no wine culture and therefore no desire for fine wine. In the 50’s there we basically 2 groups of wine drinks – wine snobs and skid row bums. 10/7/ people met at the home Dr. Frank to form an organization to inform the American public and to promote superior quality of domestic wines. 12/3/67 a smaller group again met at the home of Dr. Frank to officially found the American Wine Society with A.W. Laubengayer as president and Dr. Frank as founder and advisor. The AWS was formed to promote wine to interested consumers through education and to advance wine quality and appreciation through competition among both professional and amateur winemakers. Today the AWS is the oldest organization in the US of its type.

Fred Frank (third generation), the son of Willy Frank and grandson of Dr. Konstantin Frank, is currently at the helm as winery president. Meaghan Frank (fourth generation), daughter of Fred Frank recently joined the family business.

23 Let’s Toast Resolutions!
Expand your wine knowledge with a few new wine resolutions in 2017. Drink a wine you would never normally consider trying. Such as? A wine from an appellation you never heard of, or an expensive red you heard of or if you only like whites try a bold red. Taste all 5 sweetness levels of sparking wine to see which you like best. From driest to sweetest, pop the Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Dry and Demi-Sec. Discover your favorite food pairing with your go-to-wine. You might discover that popcorn pairs well with your Chardonnay. Go rogue with an ice cube in your Chardonnay, red wine with fish, or wine ice cubes in sparkling water. But as always, wine is all about what you like.

24 “What I like to drink most is wine that belongs to others!”
Quote of the Month “What I like to drink most is wine that belongs to others!” (Diogenes the Cynic)

25 Godspeed and Best Wishes everyone!!
Till next month...be good, behave and be well. Godspeed and Best Wishes everyone!!
