Audience Parents of students in grades 9 – 12
In small town in rural Ontario Based on new Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum Number of participants: 24 Number of facilitators: 1-2

EVENT LOCATION Community Centre
Not just about formal education, but applicable to the community’s health and needs Room Set-Up U-shaped desks with moveable chairs in a room large enough to pull chairs into circles for small groups

Invitation plan Organized by services organizations, religious groups, parent councils, libraries etc. Goes out through schools, community centres etc. Parents sign-up online Saturdays in the fall (parents) Successive weekends (students)

LEARNING OUTCOMES Participants can articulate several primary components to the curriculum. Participants can identify rationale for the changes Participants can correctly identify the same practices for contraceptive and sexual health prevention that their child(ren) learn in schools. Participants understand the importance of parents’ involvement in a student’s education/ Participants understand the importance of peer involvement in a student’s education.

Participants understand the importance of parents’ involvement in a student’s Education:
Parents are the primary educators of their children with respect to: Learning about values, Appropriate behaviour Spiritual, and personal beliefs and traditions Parents can support their children’s learning effectively in a variety of ways: They can attend parent-teacher interviews, Participate in parent workshops, Take part in school council activities or become a school council member.

Participants understand the importance of parents’ involvement in a student’s Education:
Awareness will enhance parents’ ability to discuss their children’s work with them, to communicate with teachers. By recognizing the achievements of their children in health and physical education, parents can help them develop confidence. Parents act as significant role models for their children

BOPPS Lesson Plan: Learning outcome is cognitive, leading to affective Bridge-in Invite participants to think back to 1998 Objective Introduce learning outcome for session Pre-assessment Pose question to group: Why do you believe the curriculum has been updated recently? Participatory learning: True or False statements: Post-assessment Invite parents to list reasons for a curriculum update ask them to circle reasons they believe the curriculum update to be valid, and cross out reasons they believe to be invalid Closing Round table check-in based on content before break
