Disaster recovery and backup
5/30/2018 Disaster recovery and backup One does not = the other Disaster Recovery When your applications have a catastrophic failure, run them in Azure or a secondary datacenter Backup When your data is corrupted or lost, restore your data to the original location or a new location retain it for a LONG time © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. Key learnings Use the right tool for the job Bandwidth matters
Considerations

Know Your Options Microsoft Azure DPM / MAB Server Physical Servers
Azure Backup Agent = Clients or File Shares System Center Data Protection Manager = VMs & Apps Microsoft Azure Backup Server = VMs & Apps (No System Center license required!) DPM / MAB Server Win2k12r2 2 cores 4GB RAM Disk pool (1.5x Data) -Minimum- Physical Servers Data Channel Recovery Services Vault Azure VM Microsoft Azure DPM or MABS Server Schedules and orchestrates backups, hosts storage pool for local retention Azure Backup Agent Provides File and Folder level backup and restore for Windows Server & Client OS Azure Backup Service Manages retention and pruning of Cloud backups and provides centralized monitoring and reporting. Manages all aspects of Azure VM Backups.

How do I use this information?
Change rate Change rate is the % of data that is generated or modified on a daily basis. This data needs to be transferred to Azure. There are several ways to measure change rate. Your current Backup solution reports Use Full Backup stats for baseline Use incremental for daily transfers Remember you can leverage Azure Import Service! How do I use this information?

Capacity planning Setting Expectations
What can be done with current bandwidth? What if it was increased? What are the network and storage costs? Resources: Azure Backup Sizing Tool Azure VM Backup Sizing Tool
11
Common considerations
Description What can you do? Support for 3rd Party Applications No application consistency for Oracle, MongoDB, other Linux applications today Native tools (RMAN) + Azure Backup Use 3rd Party (Commvault, Veritas, etc) VM Crash consistency Large scale client (desktop/laptop) backups Client backup management via Azure Portal may not be robust enough Leverage DPM or MABS Use a 3rd Party (Datacastle, etc) More features coming soon! Long term retention Storage optimization and data security availability Backups are compressed, incremental forever, and encrypted More storage optimizations coming Azure VM Backup Locality and Operation Azure VM Backups within same region as the source VM and time to complete backups appears lengthy Vault can be GRS More VM availability options coming Time to complete includes verification Juggle schedules! Internet access requirements Azure Backup leverages public Azure URLs Whitelist service URLs or IP Ranges Configure ExpressRoute Public Peering

Replication & Migration of workloads
5/30/2018 Replication & Migration of workloads Heterogeneous Platform Support Cloud 1st Service Datacenter Extension A true Public Cloud DR Service is on-demand, heterogeneous, and automated. Data Replication forms a constant connection to the Public Cloud. Your data can become usable on demand for Recovery, Testing, or Migration. SQL Replication requirement list here Hyper-V requirement list here VMware/Physical requirements here DR Service Migration Cloud Storage Virtual Machines Multiple Recovery Points RPO of seconds / RTO of minutes NDO Testing Orchestrated recovery Replication Physical Servers On Demand Infrastructure for a variety of uses (Migration to Cloud, Disaster Recovery, DevTest) © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. Help is on the way! Bandwidth – again! Capacity Planning
VM readiness for DR and Migration to Azure Churn profiling Bandwidth/Throughput measurement Storage, Compute and bandwidth requirements Setting Expectations What can be done with current bandwidth? 17
Common Considerations
Description What can you do? Maximum Azure VM Disk is 1023GB Azure Storage currently supports up to 1023GB disks. The number of available disks varies by VM size. Application-level replication to VM with striped volume Resize / restructure source volumes StorSimple replication of large disks UEFI Boot Volumes Azure does not support VMs with UEFI Boot Partitions Convert source disks Replicate to a hybrid environment Failover Clustering Azure does not support shared disks Application-level replication StorSimple replication of source Interoperability Site Recovery has a specific list of supported OSes Always check the Deployment guide New OSes added frequently See next slide for more End-to-end management Site Recovery delivers powerful automation, but some customers need more help We have a rich partner ecosystem See next slide
