THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY 'The Fellowship of the Ring' released in 2001 scored 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Ian McKellen but won 4 Oscars including Best Original Score for Howard Shore. A year later 'The Two Towers' received 6 nominations which still included a Best Picture bid taking home prizes for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. The Academy made up for those sleights a year later when 'The Return of the King' completed an unprecedented clean sweep of all 11 categories it had been nominated for picking up Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and a third straight Best Visual Effects win in its total.

The original novel was written by Winston Groom in The movie became an instant hit when it was released in 1994 and also made the book widely popular. The film would go on to win six Academy Awards, far overshadowing the source material.

The novel originally written by Michael Crichton in 1990 was adapted by Stephen Spielberg only three years later. The book does offer the scientific theory and morals of bringing an extinct species back to life, but doesn’t focus on story movement and action. The movie amped up the action, characters and all around plot with some amazing special effects.
