7 What is a Cell? All living organisms are made up of cells.
These organisms can be either: Uni-cellular (made of 1 cell) or Multi-cellular (2 or more cells)

8 Types of Cells There are 2 classifications of cells:
Prokaryotic – cells without a nucleus Eukaryotic – cells with a nucleus Within Eukaryotic Cells, there are 2 main classifications: Animal Cells – Found in all organisms that are not producers Plant Cells – Found in organisms that are producers

11 Prokaryotic Cells Prokaryotes are evolutionarily ancient.
They were the first signs of life on Earth billions of years ago. Even with the evolution of more complex cells, prokaryotes are successful. Archeabacteria are still prokaryotic organisms.

Only has 5 parts: -DNA floating in the center -Cell Membrane - Cell Wall -Cytoplasm -Ribosomes

13 Animal vs. Plant Cells All animal and plant cells have the same organelles except for: Animal Plant -Lysosomes _Chloroplasts for photosynthesis - Centrioles -Vesicles -Large Vacuole - Cell Membrane

Description: Plant-inside cell wall Animal –outer layer Double layer of phospholipids with proteins Semi-permeable Cell Membrane Function: Support and protection Controls movement of materials in and out of cell Maintains homeostasis

Controls cell activities Contains the hereditary material of the cell

Double membrane Semi-permeable Function: Controls movement of materials in and out of the nucleus

Organelles found inside of cell membrane Function: Supports and protects cell organelles

Network of tubes or membrane Smooth w/out ribosomes Rough with embedded ribosomes Connects to nuclear envelope and cell membrane Function: Carries materials through the cell Aids in making proteins

Made of rRNA and protein Function: Synthesizes proteins

Outer membrane is smooth Inner membrane folded into cristae Function: Breaks down sugar (glucose) to release energy in the form of ATP Site of cellular respiration

22 Cell Parts Golgi Apparatus Description: Stacks of flattened sacs
Function: Modify proteins made by the cells Package and export proteins

Largest organelle in plant cells Function: Stores food, water, metabolic and toxic wastes Store large amounts of food or sugars in plants

May have more than one Disappears during cell division Function: Makes ribosomes

(Uncommon in Plant cells, but very common in Animal cells.) Description: Small and round with a single membrane Function: Breaks down larger food molecules into smaller molecules Digests old cell parts

Made of microtubules & microfilaments Function: Strengthen cell and maintains the shape

Cell Wall Description: Outer layer Rigid and strong Made of cellulose Function: Support (grow tall) Protection Allows H2O, O2, and CO2 to diffuse in and out of cell

Chloroplasts Description: Green, oval containing chlorophyll Double membrane with inner membrane modified into sacs Gel-like innermost substance called stroma Function: Uses energy from sun to make glucose for the plant Process called ‘Photosynthesis’ Releases Oxygen as a waste product

Centrioles Description: Paired structures near the nucleus Made of microtubule pairs formed into a cylinder Function: Separate chromosome pairs during mitosis

30 Cell Movement Cilia Description: Fine, hair-like structures
Short, but numerous Function: Movement of cell

31 Cell Movement Flagellum Description: Whip-like structure
Long, but few in number Function: Movement of cell
