CORRECT! Great Job! Thunderstorms are characterized by lightening, thunder, heavy rain, and sometimes hail. Thunder makes a huge booming sound. Thunder is caused by the expansion of air at high speeds. As the air expends, it causes the booming noise. Thunder can be heard from as far as ten miles away. Thunderstorms can be scary because of the loud boom. Back

CORRECT! Great Job! Lightning occurs when electricity builds up in thunder clouds, and then is released as lightning. It is very hot, and is shaped like a zig-zag. Lightning does not always go from the cloud down to Earth, it can also run from cloud to cloud. Lightning takes the shortest path between the sky and the ground, which often causes it to strike trees. Back

CORRECT! Great Job! Tornadoes are funnel shaped storms which rotate much like hurricanes; however, tornadoes are much smaller than hurricanes. As hot air spins upward, the tornado spins around. Winds in the center of the tornado can reach speeds of 400 miles per hours. Tornadoes are violent because of their speed, and the fact that they are unpredictable. As they travel they jump around the land, sucking up anything in their path. Tornadoes over a body of water are called water spouts. Back

CORRECT! Great Job! Hurricanes begin over warm, tropical bodies of water. When hurricanes hit land, they gradually lose their powerful and the winds and rain dies down. One interesting fact about hurricanes is that depending on whether they are north or south of the equator the hurricane blows in a different direction! Hurricanes north of the equator blow in a counter-clockwise direction, and hurricanes south of the equator blow in a clockwise direction. Hurricanes are called different things around the world. In the Pacific Ocean, hurricanes are called Tsunamis. A typhoon is a hurricane which occurs in the region of the Philippines or the China Sea. There are no differences between the three except their location on the planet and the name they are called, the weather phenomena is the same. Back

CORRECT! Great Job! Rain occurs when moisture in the atmosphere falls to Earth. Rain is a type of precipitation like snow, sleet, and hail. These are all different types of moisture which fall to Earth, with rain being the most common. Rain is a very important part of life. It provides water to drink, to wash our cars, and water the grass. Rain also keeps rivers and lakes at a stable level protecting the animals and fish that live in these environments. It is important to conserve water and only use what you need so that there will never be water shortages. Back

CORRECT! Great Job! The Sun is the source of energy which drives the weather. All of the heat and light on Earth comes from the Sun. The Sun provides the Earth with solar energy in the from of waves which are similar to radio waves. Don't forget the sunscreen! The rays of the sun are very powerful, and can give you a sunburn even when the sky is cloudy! Back

CORRECT! Great job! A flood occurs when a massive amount of rain falls over an extended period of time. These are called flash floods. The amount of rain is so large that the lakes and rivers cannot hold all the water. Water accumulates at places that are normally dry causing extensive damage to the environment including: homes, animals, and any crops or plant life in the area. Floods along rivers can also be caused by other reasons, such as spring rain, snow melt, or from heavy rain connected with a type of storm such as a hurricane or that drop large quantities of rain.
