Compromise of 1850 California became a free state
They stopped selling slaves in D.C. Fugitive Slave Act was passed by congress- this meant that the escaped slaves had to be returned to their slave owners

Kansas-Nebraska Act Let the people of each territory decide whether to be a slave state or a free state This act overrode the Missouri Compromise Called “bleeding Kansas” in the 1850’s because violent fights about slavery

Abraham Lincoln Was elected president in 1860
Southern slave owners were upset Southern states separated themselves from the Union and called themselves the Confederates States
