Why do we learn variables?
With variables, we are able to explain the situations around us. Variables are always used to represent numbers that change throughout a process. Examples include income, expenses, total distance traveled, depth from surface, etc. Word problems are our way of practicing using variables.

You are making chocolate for your friends. A mold for a chocolate bar costs $22.50 and each chocolate bar costs $5. Write an algebraic expression for the total cost of making x chocolate bars. You make 8 chocolate bars. Find the total cost.

A salesperson at an electronics store makes 15% commission on each sale and an additional $250 each week. Write an algebraic expression to represent the amount of money the salesperson makes each week. How much money will they make if they sell two TVs at $800 each?

The Williams family are getting ready to make a 640-mile car trip. In general, their car can drive 160 miles on 5 gallons of gasoline. How many gallons of gasoline will they use for the trip? They started out with 4 gallons of gasoline in their car, and gasoline is $2.29 per gallon. How much money will you spend on gasoline on the trip?
