Overview of the Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology
A method for understanding, measuring and reporting on the value that is created by an organisation / activity / service. It examines an organisation’s work and impact across three areas: Social; Economic; and Environmental. It attributes a value to each outcome using stakeholder engagement, research and common accounting and investment appraisal methods. Result: An understanding of the theory of change for each stakeholder group. An index that compares monetised outcomes to the investment required to generate it. The SROI Process 1 2 3 4 5 6 Scope Project Map Outcomes Evidence Outcomes Establish Impact Calculate the SROI Report, Use & Embed Established scope and identified stakeholders in each of the three countries including stakeholders across countries. Engaged with stakeholders in a Theory of Change workshop to develop an impact map for RHIVA which shows the relationship between inputs, outputs and outcomes. Evidencing outcomes during stakeholder workshops interviews in 3 countries. Established the impact of RHIVA by determining those aspects of change that would have happened anyway or are of a result of other factors. Calculated the SROI by adding up all the benefits, subtracting any negatives and comparing the result to the investment. Report, use and embed the findings of this analysis by communicating the results, and embedding the SROI process in the organization.

Total social value creation per stakeholder group
SADC - Third highest benefit in Zambia and the fourth highest in Mozambique and Namibia. MOH - Is the second last beneficiary for all three countries. The RHIVA Programme measures MoH’s benefit by evaluating the change of a lower transmission in HIV amongst learners. The benefit for the SROI is only applicable to the M&E Survey learner population, this population is minute in comparison to the countries population as a whole. If MoH benefit was compared to the country as a whole, it would amount to the highest benefit Parents - Are the last beneficiary for Mozambique and Namibia and the fourth highest beneficiary for Zambia. An increase in parents involvement in learners’ education would result in greater effectiveness as parents was measured by the use of tertiary enrolment rates and the cost of the first year of tertiary education. Additional impact is achieved for parents in Intervention Group 2, which can be equated to that of “private vs. public” school education. Learners are receiving tuition which translates to private tuition. Benefit to parents pertains to improved understanding of career guidance and sexual health hence leading to an enhanced family environment.

Using SROI to understand the impact of RHIVA?
Stakeholder Recommendations Learners Extensive communication/ advocacy to learners on the intentions behind RHIVA Parents Understanding the changes RHIVA is intending to create, the increased involvement in the programme will lead to a greater impact of the programme Teachers Teachers are such a critical component of the success for the programme due to them being the main point of contact between the programme and learners MoE Sustained involvement is an imperative MoH SADC Sustained involvement, monitoring and support is an imperative M&E process Improved integration between M&E and SROI
