1 GCSE REVISION AND P16 PATHWAY EVENING

2 What can you do as a parent?
Be a supportive, critical friend Provide resources Provide a quiet space to revise Be positive and encouraging Help manage time ATTENDANCE – being here every day, even if not 100% is vital.

3 What can you do as a parent?
Check what they are doing… Know their grades Are they revising the right things? (the subjects/topics they don’t like as well as the ones they do) TEST – REVISE –TEST (repeat) Revision is ACTIVE not PASSIVE

4 ACTIVE NOT PASSIVE Spider diagrams, mindmaps, tree diagrams, visual guides Make big posters and put them around the house Apps and Video clips Flashcards Testing Explain keypoints to someone else Examination style questions in correct amount of time Mneumonics

5 Pressure and Stress Students need to maintain activities they enjoy
Exercise helps reduce stress A revision timetable should have planned breaks and rewards A good diet – eating every meal time Sleep is ESSENTIAL

6 DON’T ACCEPT 2nd BEST! Don’t allow your teenager to ‘ignore’ subjects even if they don’t think they’ll need them in the future Don’t just aim for entry grades Careers often have specific entry requirements A grade may be enough to get into college for example, but then not enough to get onto the next level Colleges asked for specific ‘points’ information from students last year, even when the entry grade they had requested had been achieved. If a student gets a 3 – Maths and/or English will have to be redone

7 Other bits… Encourage your youngster to attend all additional sessions on offer Talk to your teenager about they are feeling. Contact school if you are concerned Encourage your teenager to empty their bag and file information Help your teenager be tidy and organised Get them off to a good start, but don’t nag them in between!

8 Mathematics

9 Practise makes perfect
The important thing to recognise when revising maths is that it depends on understanding and application. Past papers are the obvious resource, as they are a good indicator of the standard required and the type of questions the examiners ask. Textbooks have examples and worked solutions. Remember, mistakes can often be the best way to learn.

10 Memorising Remember, remember There are some GCSE topics that do need to be memorised Either stick them up around your bedroom, or write them out repeatedly until they are ingrained. Write a story or rhyme to help with more difficult formulae

11 Use the key strategies that work for YOU
Work in a small group Use YouTube (constructively)  Make flash cards Use the PiXL app Review checkpoints Workbooks & Revision guides together Masterclasses Study support sessions
