Acute hunger or starvation is often highlighted on TV screens: hungry mothers too weak to nurse their children in drought-hit Ethiopia, refugees in war-torn Syria queueing for food rations, helicopters airlifting high energy biscuits to earthquake victims in Haiti or Pakistan. What is Hunger
4
People living in poverty cannot afford nutritious food for themselves and their families. This makes them weaker and less able to earn the money that would help them escape poverty and hunger. This is not just a day-to-day problem: when children are chronically malnourished, or ‘stunted’, it can affect their future income, condemning them to a life of poverty and hunger. Natural disasters such as floods, tropical storms and long periods of drought are on the increase -- with calamitous consequences for the hungry poor in developing countries Across the globe, conflicts consistently disrupt farming and food production. Fighting also forces millions of people to flee their homes, leading to hunger emergencies as the displaced find themselves without the means to feed themselves. The conflict in Syria is a recent example. What Causes Hunger

There is no specific date for when the global food crisis started, although historians recognize the genesis of "food regimes" dating back to the 16th century, particularly during the colonial era. During this time, a mercantile food system was created, whereby basic agricultural products, such as grains, milk and meat, were produced in Europe while the colonies were forced through restrictive tariffs to produce special goods for the mother countries When Did Hunger Start

More than 1.5 million people in Afghanistan are severely food insecure – an increase of more than 317,000 since last year. Another 7.3 million people – more than one in every four Afghans – are moderately food insecure. Six and a half percent of children between the ages of 6 and 8 months in Bolivia are not breastfeed. This has an effect on their proper growth and development. WFP aims to reach 1.27 million women and children in DPRK with food assistance. However, because of funding constraints, the programme is currently able to reach less than half of this number each month Hunger Facts #1

Climate change impacts hunger and malnutrition, especially in dry ecozones and areas affected by drought. One-third of the refugee population living in Iranian settlements are severely food insecure. According to the 2013 Hunger Index, Burkina Faso is ranked 65th out of 78 countries. In the Human Development Index 2014, Burkina Faso is ranked 183rd out of 187. Seventeen percent of children under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition. In some rural areas, the percentage can be as high as 40 percent. Hunger Facts #2

Over two decades of conflict have left 1
Over two decades of conflict have left 1.1 million Somalis displaced in their own country, and almost a million as refugees in neighbouring countries. High food prices, combined with frequent droughts and floods have compounded poverty and continue to threaten livelihoods. Nepal’s vulnerability to high food prices, especially in remote mountain areas, drives hunger. Average food prices in the mountain and hill regions are over 100 percent higher than in other locations. Hunger Facts #3
