2 What is exercise? Exercise is an activity that requires physical effort, carried out in order to sustain or improve health and fitness. People exercise in order to develop a healthy lifestyle, become fit, or to be used as a stress relief. What many people don’t know is that there are positive effects to exercise, however there are also many negative effects to it.

3 Positive effects of exercise
On the brain: Exercise can help memory and thinking Ability to reduce insulin resistance Reduce inflammation Stimulate the reduce of growth factors Chemicals in the brain that affect the health of brain cells Growth of new blood vessels in the brain Survival of new brain cells Exercise affects the prefrontal cortex and medial temporal cortex in positive ways

4 Positive effects of exercise
On the body: Your body gets healthier and stronger Reduce risk of hypertension, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and heart disease Lower resting heart rate and more energy Helps burn calories, resulting in weight loss You can get more defined in tone It can improve your physical appearance and boost self esteem. Promotes sleep

5 Positive effects of exercise
On stress: Reduces stress Chemicals release that lift your mood Makes you feel more relaxed Simple yoga and aerobic exercises help Helps bump up the production of your brains “feel- good” neurotransmitters (endorphins)

6 Negative effects of exercise
Exercise related injuries: Pulled muscles Sprains Fractures and dislocations You can get injured if- -You’re out of shape -fail to wear protection -Perform moves improperly

7 Negative effects of exercise
Exercise obsession: Being overzealous about exercise can harm you Your body becomes burnt out Increases risk of injury Becoming obsessed with your body image and weight can lead to low self esteem Unhealthy attitude about role of exercise Create a routine that will work you out and not burn you out
