3. Incremental Improvements: 1, 2, & 3
Stage 1: ID Only
Get tight on your subject to show it clearly. But, include enough of the dark back- ground to create a clear separation and comfortable natural framing.
Unlike the initial single object Thing shot, this example shows a grouping which is delineated by lighting.

Stage 2: ID Plus
Back off and change camera angle to place the subject in a natural environment. Pull back by either stepping back or moozing (go from tele to wide) the zoom lens.
Also add variety to the subject statement if possible through color, shape, or showing other aspects of the subject and background.

Stage 3: Full Story
Physically back off to shoot the ‘establishing shot’ and let your subject live in a real place with fore, middle, and background.
It’s still ok to crop slightly into the subject if necessary. Do so with much consideration and design intent. Although, limit the cropping to no more than 10% of the subject.

In a slide or print show, the sequencing is up to your story. It may be reversed going from the ‘establishing shot’ to the close up. What ever your story, each image must be able to stand alone as a photograph.
