3 Background IPC was first applied in food insecurity analysis in 2004 in Somalia – IGAD founding member Now IPC is applied in 29 countries – 11 in ECA, 6 are IGAD member states July 2015 IGAD become a member of the IPC SC – high level technical and strategic decisions ECA region is disposed to a number of shocks; poverty, El Niño, La Niña, etc. and the role of IGAD is paramount in providing timely evidence-based information – role of FSNWG

4 Role of IGAD in IPC SC IPC governance and institutionalization by member states IPC analysis meets the needs of decision makers Advocate for use of IPC analyses in formulation of policy, programmes, and resource allocation Assisting member states in resource mobilization for IPC related activities including assessments, analyses and capacity building Provision of strategic guidance to member states Harmonization of cross-border analysis Ensuring coherence and respect of IPC principles by member states

5 Objective of a joint workshop
Overall Objective: Ensure national governments and partners are strategically engaged, and that countries align their IPC activities for the purpose of producing a harmonized regional food security analyses

8 Outcome and Outputs Enhancing IPC institutionalization and governance and the role of IGAD in enhancing institutionalization Country endorsed IPC TWG Terms of Reference (TOR) Strengthening the role of IGAD and links with Country IPC Joint regional work plan that aligns countries’ IPC activities Aligned IPC activities based on seasonality, decision making, etc. Agreed timeline for harmonized regional food security analysis and mapping – strengthening FSNWG products Strategy for IPC advocacy, capacity building and quality assurance Use of IPC to inform policy, response, etc. Role of different partners such as nutrition information systems in IPC IPC capacity building and support required by countries & IGAD Quality control and assurance of IPC products

9 Targeted participants for the proposed workshop
Max 5-6 per technical and strategic middle-level decision makers per country; IPC TWG Chair TWG member from the Ministry of Health (MoH) Other relevant active government institution IDDRSI focal person Development partners (WFP, FAO, UNICEF, FEWS NET)
