Remote community in Cape York (approximately 7 hours north of Cairns) 98% indigenous student population 6 clan groups inhabit the community and surrounding areas (Ayapathu, LamaLama, Kaantju, Umpila, Munkaanhu, Olkolo) 56 students enrolled P – 6 school

Year 3-5 Growth Effect Sizes measure the gain students made between two NAPLAN years as against Australian average growth (0.80). (NB: only students tested at both points are measurable) The Year 5 cohort at Coen has improved strongly, exceeding Australian average growth in all test areas.

Club Our Club component includes enriching extracurricular activities, such as instrumental music ( rhythm, reading music and performance), the arts, sports (athletics, swimming, hockey, AFL, NRL), and personal health Focuses on moral development, higher order skills and creative expression. High-quality sports, arts and music programs. Showcases sporting events, carnivals and musical and cultural performances. Partners with specialist organisations to deliver extra – curricular activities (AFL Cape York, Swimming Australia, Apunipima, Hockey QLD, Bravehearts, Queensland Music Festival, NRL). Promotes family and community participation Aligned to the Australian Curriculum

Culture Our Culture component teaches comprehensive cultural knowledge and local, traditional oral and written language. Focuses on higher order skills and project activities Builds knowledge about cultures and history of family, community, country and people. Think about someone in your family. Try and see their face in your mind. Let’s share the names of people in your family with each other and tell each other who they are. Making Connections Students, we know we all belong to a family and a kinship group. Now we will learn how everyone and everything has a kinship link.
