EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT DESIGN An Over View of the Subject
2
Subject Code: 07A70104(Elective-I)
Year : IV B.Tech Semester : I Semester Number of Units: 8 Number of Hours /Week: 5
3
Why to study ERD In the past 3 centuries over 3 million people have died due to earthquakes and earthquake related disasters. The economic losses estimated for the period are in excess of US$10 billion. 2/3 of the earths crust is seismically active, which means hat about 1,000,000,000 people are living in areas of the world that are prone to earthquakes. The Object of Reinforced Concrete design is to achieve a structure that will result in a safe and economical solution.
4
Prerequisites to study ERD
The concepts and principles studied in Engineering Mechanics Structural Analysis Design of Reinforced Concrete structures Structural Dynamics
6
Usefulness of ERD for a Civil Engineering Student
Basic principles of designing R.C.C. shall be helpful for students in designing, supervising and executing construction activities effectively Hence, it becomes essential for every civil Engineer to know the procedure and concepts for designing all components of Reinforced cement concrete.
7
Objectives The student shall be able to
Understand basic principles of R.C.C.design. Use IS code 456:2000, IS:875 (II) etc. Design of diff. R.C.C. components e.g. slab/beam/column/footing etc. Draw reinforcement details for above component members. Read and interpret structural drawings.
8
For a given structural system, the design problem consists of
Idealization of structure for Analysis Estimation of loads Analysis of idealized structural model to determine axial thrust, shears, bending moments, and deflections. Design of Structural elements, and Detailed structural drawings and schedule of reinforcing bars.
