So, far from trying to ban young people from using the internet, we should be encouraging and advising them on the best way to use it. This diagram illustrates the most common ways young people are using it. Discover: young people use the internet to find out a range of information, from school work to personal trivia. It is like having access to the largest library in the world. Connect: young people connect with friends and new acquaintances online through a variety of communication tools including , chat, Instant Messenger and newsgroups. Increasingly young people are using games and social networks to communicate – these include talking about specific things, like particular games and how to get past certain levels or talking about themselves online like writing their own diaries etc and sharing comments, opinions and even photos in an open forum. Create: young people are able to create a multitude of things online. The uniqueness of this compared to creating pieces of work offline is the potential audience that get to view these creations.
