Vocabulary Printmaking : when an image is repeatedly transferred using the same setup Plate : the surface on which an image is made. Wood, stone, linoleum, foam, etc.…

Brayer: a rolling tool used to spread ink
Baren: a round tool used to press the ink onto paper. Ink : the ‘liquid’ that takes on the shape of your image.

Gouge: the tool used to carve away your design.
Printing Press: a machine used to make many prints, quickly. Register: to line everything up so it’s straight.

Edition: The total number of identical prints (copies) made of one image.

Katsushika Hokusai 1760-1849 Edo (now Tokyo), Japan
Printed using plates made of wood. Known by at least 30 different names as an artist. ( a common practice of the time)

Process 1. find or make an image.
2. draw it onto a sheet of paper the same size as your plate. 3. transfer image to plate. 4. make test print to check for flaws in plate. 5. fix plate and test again. 6. make addition of 4, each on a different paper.
