Are some indicators better than others?
For each indicator, decide whether a high or low score would show a more developed country. Create a Diamond 9 – which effects do you think are most important? Which are least? Explain your answer.

Are some indicators better than others?
LOs: To evaluate different development indicators. To understand the different views about indicators. To evaluate indicators we need data (lots of it). To understand the data we need to represent it visually (so we don’t get over whelmed). Take a look a the video so you can understand how this data can look. Video Link

Is there a better indicator?
In the 1990s the HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX was devised as a measure of quality of life. It included life expectancy, educational attainment and GDP per capita. You are going to evaluate this measure using ‘GapMinder’ graphs. Describe what each graph is showing. Analyse the relationship between HDI and the three indicators that are used to produce it. Annotate each graph to show your thoughts and ideas.

“An overly simplistic representation”
Evaluating the HDI “The simplicity of the index’s characterization of development (as an average of achievements in health, education and income), linked to the basic message that development is about much more than growth, has contributed to its popularity.” “An overly simplistic representation” “It excludes other dimensions that are also important for development. For example, human rights, sustainability and happiness.”

Is there a better indicator?
The Happy Planet Index measures the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for the people that live in them. The Index uses global data on life expectancy, experienced well-being and Ecological Footprint to calculate this. Green = longest happiest and most sustainable lives
10
Evaluating the HDI Use your analysis and the different views of academics to evaluate the HDI. Describe what it is. Explain the advantages of it. Explain the disadvantages of it. Give your view. EXTEND YOURSELF: Do you think the HPI is a better indicator?
