THE BOOK OF TITUS SHOWS GOD CANNOT
Cards 82-85 THE BOOK OF TITUS SHOWS GOD CANNOT LIE Do you know anyone who can’t be trusted? Many people living on the island of Crete were like that. Cretans had a reputation all over the Roman empire for being lazy liars. In fact, the Greeks even made up a term for lying—to Cretize. These were the kind of people Paul’s close friend, Titus, was telling about Jesus. In this letter, which Paul probably wrote about three or four years before his death, Paul tells Titus to be firm when he teaches the new Cretan Christians. Titus tells them he has been sent to bring faith to those God had chosen and to teach them to know God’s truth—the kind of truth that changes lives—so that they can have eternal life, which God promised them before the world began—and He cannot lie!

INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN TITUS TO
OLDER MEN—OLDER WOMEN YOUNG MEN—YOUNG WOMEN Paul told Titus to teach the older men to be serious and unruffled; they must be sensible, knowing and believing the truth and doing everything with love and patience. Titus was to teach the older women to be quiet and respectful in everything they do. They must not go around speaking evil of others but they should be teachers of goodness. These older women must train the younger women to live quietly, to love their husbands and their children, and to be sensible and clean minded, spending their time in their own homes, being kind and obedient to their husbands, so that the Christian faith can’t be spoken against by those who know them. In the same way Titus was to urge the young men to behave carefully, taking life seriously. And here you yourself must be an example to them of good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect your love of the truth and the fact that you are in dead earnest about it. Your conversation should be so sensible and logical that anyone who wants to argue will be ashamed of himself because there won’t be anything to criticize in any thing you say!

LETTER ABOUT SLAVE WHO HAD RUN AWAY
PHILEMON Paul may have written many private letters during his long life, but only one had come down to us, and that one is very brief and weighty. It was addressed to Philemon at Colosse, one who had become obedient to the faith through the labors of Paul. He was a zealous Christian, in whose house the church met. The Epistle was written and sent at the same time as that to the Colossians. The Epistle is purely personal, yet very significant. Paul omits his usual introductory words—”an apostle of Jesus Christ”—and substitutes the touching designation, “a prisoner of Jesus Christ,” thereby going directly to the heart of his beloved friend and brother in Christ.

RUNAWAY SLAVE CONCERTED BY PAUL
ONESIMUS In Luke, Jesus tells a story about a young man who ran away from home (The Prodigal Son). Philemon is also about a young runaway—Onesimus. Not only had Onesimus run away from his master, Philemon, but he had also stolen things from him. In Rome, Onesimus had met Paul who taught him the gospel, to which he became obedient, and became a Christian. Now Onesimus desired to return to his master, he was going home. While Paul was in prison, he wrote to Philemon and asked him not to punish Onesimus for what he had done. Paul accordingly sent back Onesimus to his rightful master yet under a new character, no more a contemptible thief and runaway, but a new man in Christ Jesus and a beloved brother, with a touching request that Philemon might receive him as kindly as he would Paul himself, yea as his own heart.
