AS and A level qualifications in Wales
Wales: We will be Retaining AS and A level brand names and the current grading structures Retaining AS and A levels as coupled qualifications (however, the weighting of the AS is being reduced from the current 50% to 40%) Sharing the same content, if appropriate, as those in England (and possibly Northern Ireland) Assessing and recognising practical skills Allowing assessments only in summer Limiting resits to one per unit

Formal: Statutory PSE RE Approved qualifications AS/A levels, BTECs, WBQ diploma Learning Core (skills, knowledge and understanding, attitudes and values, common experiences) Non-formal: DoE, Millennium Volunteers, Music exams etc. Super-curricular activities Informal: Sport, hobbies, production – Extra- curricular activities

Creating a pathway Portfolio of GCSE grades (yr11) 4 GCSEs A*-C A portfolio of GCSEs Pathway A Choose 3-4 level 3 AS/A level subjects from option pools. Pathway C A mixture of courses at the appropriate level (L2 and L3). Pathway B Choose BTEC from the option pool. Welsh Baccalaureate (universal adoption) Skills Challenge Certificate Pathways are the learning routes you take. A provides you with a large variety of AS level qualifications - academic. B offers a more practical approach to learning via BTEC qualifications and work experience. C offeres a mixture to suit the learner. All pathways allow students to access the Welsh Bac. All pathways allow progression to further educations, Higher education and careers. Progression to: Higher Education at University, Further Education at College, Employment and Apprenticeships

Post 16 Pathway Evening – 24th November 2016 Step 1: Information and planning (November) What skills do I need to develop for future careers? What courses are available to me? What are the entry requirements for courses? Step 2: Application Process Opens (December) When do I apply? How do I apply? Which qualifications will I need to provide? Step 3: Interviews/offers and Refining choices (February/March) How will I know if I get offers? What are the types of offer? Will I be interviewed? How do I reply to offers? Step 4: Working towards entry requirement (November – June) Early exam entries. Complete controlled assessment. 100% attendance. Extra learning/revision sessions. Sacrifices. Pathway to Success Step 5: RESULTS DAY (24th August 2017) Collect and check your results. Confirm you have met the entry requirements. Get advice on alternative pathways Step 7: Stepping up to a new level 3 pathway (September 2017) Sign learning agreement. Sixth Form induction. Develop new skills.
