Acceleration!!
2
Acceleration: Change in velocity over time
Ex: when you pedal harder on your bike to gain speed your velocity changes. When you slow down to stop, velocity changes.
3
Acceleration Equation:
a = Δv t a = final velocity – initial velocity time
4
So what do you think?? Knowing how to solve for acceleration, what is the unit for this variable?? Thinking about the equation to solve for acceleration, what do you think the acceleration is for an object with a constant velocity?
5
What does acceleration tell you?
If acceleration is small, the object’s speed is increasing very gradually If acceleration is large, speed is increasing rapidly
6
Practice Natalie accelerates her skateboard along a straight path from 0 m/s to 4.0 m/s in 2.5 seconds. Find her average acceleration.
7
A turtle swimming in a straight line toward shore has a speed of 0
A turtle swimming in a straight line toward shore has a speed of 0.5 m/s. After 4 sec, it speed is 0.8 m/s. What is the turtles average acceleration?
8
Marisa’s car accelerates at an average rate of 2. 6 m/s2
Marisa’s car accelerates at an average rate of 2.6 m/s2. Calculate how long it takes her car to accelerate from 24.6 m/s to 26.8 m/s.
9
A cyclist travels at a constant velocity of 4
A cyclist travels at a constant velocity of 4.5 m/s westward, then speeds up with a steady acceleration of 2.3 m/s2. Calculate the cyclist’s speed after accelerating for 5.0 sec.
10
How can a graph be used to represent acceleration?
Think back to speed graphs. What variable was on the y axis? On the x axis? What did the slope of the line tell us about the object? Apply this knowledge to devise a strategy to graph acceleration… think, write, share
11
Think about it.. If an increase in acceleration is represented by a positive value, what sign is the value that represents a decrease in acceleration? What does the slope of a velocity-time graph tell you? What will a line graph look like if the acceleration is increasing? How will it look different if it is decreasing?
