Non-verbal Communication in Teaching

Aims: To make participants aware about nonverbal communication (What), so that they realize its importance in teaching and apply the techniques to improve their communication skills (Why).

Objectives: Define nonverbal communication
By the end of the session, the participants will be able to: Define nonverbal communication Realise the importance and benefit State reasons for using these State major types Describe ways to improve nonverbal skills (Behaviour – Condition - Criteria)

Definition He speaketh not; and yet there lies A conversation in his eyes. Information conveyed through the use of body language are primarily known as nonverbal communication. It is behaviour other than spoken or written communication that creates or represents meaning.

Importance Verbal channels explicitly communicate about 7% of the emotional meaning of a message. About 38 percent is communicated by paralanguage, which is basically the use of the voice. About 55 percent comes through nonverbal, which includes such things as gesture, posture, facial expression, etc.

Benefit An awareness of nonverbal behavior will allow you to become better receivers of students' messages. You will become a better sender of signals that reinforce learning. This mode of communication increases the degree of the perceived psychological closeness between teacher and student.

Aids in synchronization of speech Nonverbal cues unveils unspoken messages Nonverbal messages communicate emotions and desparity Nonverbal messages are seen as more reliable

Check context Look for clusters Consider past experience Practice perception checking

Tips for improvement Make yourself comfortable with the other
Be relaxed and attentive Maintain frequent eye contact. Avoid staring, glaring, or looking away Give nonverbal communication while the other is talking, such as a simple nod of approval Keep gestures smooth and unobtrusive

Tips for improvement Your rate of speech should be average or a bit slower Maintain a clearly audible voice Your feet and legs should be unobtrusive Smile when appropriate Stay alert through long conversations Face people squarely
