1 Unit 2 Vocabulary Celebrate Freedom Week

2 Bill of Rights The first ten amendments to the United States Constitution. These amendments guarantee a number of personal freedoms.

3 Legislative Branch (Separation of Powers)

4 Executive Branch (Separation of Powers)

5 Judicial Branch (Separation of Powers)

6 Checks and Balances Each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. This way, no one branch becomes too powerful.

7 Veto a constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a law-making body

8 Bill a draft of a proposed law presented to Legislature.

9 Popular Sovereignty the principle that the authority of a state and its government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives (Rule by the People), who are the source of all political power.

10 Republic A republic is a form of government or country in which power resides in elected individuals representing the citizen body and government leaders exercise power according to the rule of law.

11 Democracy a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

12 Amendment An amendment is a formal or official change made to a law, contract, constitution, or other legal document.

13 Civic Responsibility the responsibilities of a citizen

14 Constitution The Law of the Land
a body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which a state or other organization is acknowledged to be governed.
