Knew from a young age that she wanted to be an artist:
“After we are through school, I am going to give up everything for my art. I am going to live a different kind of life from the rest of you girls.”

6. Remembered patterns on a quilt she saw before she was a year old.
Didn’t care about rules of dress for women and dressed in plain, loose clothes with her hair tied back in a braid.
Often made her own clothes and lived simply.

She didn’t sign her paintings.
She loved to roller-skate. When she was too old to skate by herself, her assistant would roller-skate her around the gym on his back.
