Intro to Meiosis
2
Confusing Terms Homologous chromosome: chromosomes that are alike in appearance and in the type of genetic information they carry Diploid: # of chromosomes in normal somatic (body) cells. 2n Haploid: # of chromosomes in the gametes (reproductive cells). n
3
Let’s remember mitosis
PMAT Occurs in body cells Identical offspring Diploid (2n) – two sets of homologous chromosomes In humans total # of chromosomes = 46 = 2n
4
Meiosis – What’s the difference?
Mitosis Meiosis Where does it occur? Replication of cell materials Division of Cell # of daughter cells Result Importance Body (somatic cells) Ex. Skin, liver, stomach, etc. Cells that produce sex cells (egg and sperm) = gametes 1x 1x 1x 2x 2 cells 4 cells 2n (diploid) n (haploid) Genetically identical NOT genetically identical Creates gametes , reduces chromosome # in half Produces cells for tissue growth/repair
