Intro to the World of IT Chapter 1
Optional in Class Activity: The Fish Bowl Give the students index cards (at the beginning or end of class). Ask each student to write down one question concerning the course material. At the beginning of class – these questions could be related to the textbook material or homework. At the end of class – these questions could be related to that day’s lecture. They should be directed to ask a question of clarification regarding some aspect of the material which they do not fully understand Students deposit their questions in a fish bowl. The instructor then draws several questions out of the bowl and answers them for the class or asks the class to answer them.

Listen carefully to the customer Make good eye contact Show you are following the conversation and avoiding distractions Clarify customer statements by asking related questions Avoid interrupting the customer Avoid condescending behavior Ask open-ended questions

Be sensitive to other cultures Take the time to listen to the entire problem Avoid blaming others Do your best with every opportunity

Hardware: Physical components of a computer system. (If you can touch it, it is probably hardware.) Examples? Software: One or more programs. What is a program? Wait… what about “Firmware”?

Bits and Bytes Bit – a 1 or a 0 Byte – 8 bits
Kilobyte (KB) – approximately one thousand bytes Megabyte (MB) – approximately one million bytes Gigabyte (GB) – approximately one billion bytes Terabyte (TB) – approximately one trillion bytes (Kibibyte? See pg. 22) Optional Class Activity: Windows, Windows, Windows Show various screenshots or images of the Windows environments. Have students name which version of the operating system is being shown.
