1 OBJECTIVES OF TODAY’S ACTIVITY
TOPIC: The Greenhouse Effect After today’s activity, you will be able to: Explain how natural processes involving greenhouse gases cause warming of Earth’s atmosphere. Both groups

2 CASUAL PRINCIPLES Gravitational energy, thermal energy, and/or chemical energy drive all movement and change of matter on Earth. 3. Matter moves and changes to return a system to equilibrium. 5. Temperature is a measure of the movement of molecules. Higher temperature means molecules are moving faster. Both groups

3 Background: Temperature
Temperature is the average kinetic energy of molecules. Q. Do molecules move faster in cold or warm air? A. Molecules move faster in warm air because they have more energy.

4 Background: Energy Transfer
Experimental group

5 Background: Types of Energy
Experimental group

6 Background: Greenhouse Effect
Solar radiation enters the Earth’s atmosphere Earth’s surface converts solar radiation into heat. Earth radiates heat to atmosphere. Gases in atmosphere absorb the heat. Experimental group

7 Background: Greenhouse Effect
Experimental group What type of energy reaches the Earth’s surface? A. Visible Light and UV light

8 Background: Greenhouse Effect
Experimental group What type of energy is re-radiated by the Earth’s surface? A. Infrared energy

9 Source: Target Greenhouse: Greenhouse Effect
Glass Soil, plants, other surfaces in greenhouse Solar radiation Heat inside greenhouse Reflection of visible light off the glass Vents in the greenhouse Experimental group

10 Alignment: Comparing a greenhouse to the greenhouse effect
Principle Glass Soil, plants, other surfaces in greenhouse Solar radiation Heat inside greenhouse Reflection of visible light off the glass Vents in the greenhouse Experimental group

11 Differences: Comparing a greenhouse and the greenhouse effect
Glass Greenhouse Gases Experimental group

12 Group work & Homework: Greenhouse Effect
Part 2 : Work in your groups to align the aspects of the greenhouse effect with the actual greenhouse, identify causal principles related to each feature, identify the differences between the greenhouse and the natural process. Fill out the Group Worksheet to turn in at the end of class. Part 3: Homework If you complete your group work, you may start the homework. Please work on your own. This means your answers should be generally unique from other students. Turn in the homework using ANGEL.
