Irony A contrast or incongruity between what is stated and what is meant (verbal irony), or between what is expected t happen and what actually happens (irony of situation). Examples: “How nice !” when I said I had to work all weekend.

Analogy An explanation or description of something unfamiliar or difficult to explain by comparison with something familiar. Examples: Passed away for died. Perspire for sweat

Hyperbole Exaggeration to create an effect. Examples:
I was to surprised, you could have knocked me over with my father I would rather die than eat brussels sprous.

Paradox Holding contradictory ideas together in order to point to a deeper truth. Examples: "The silence of midnight, to speak truly, though apparently a paradox, rung in my ears"

Simile Comparison between two things using “like or as.” Examples:
“My love is like a red, red rose.” My hair is long like Juanita’s hair. I’m free as a bird.

Metaphor A direct comparison between two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as.” Examples: The sun was a ball of fire. “Life is but an empty dream.”

Rhythm When words have the same sounds. Examples:
“Happy the man who, safe, on shore. Tiger! Tiger! Burning bright.

Alliteration The repetition of the name consonant sounds in lines of poetry or prose. Examples: “Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,”- Langston Hughes.

Imagery The use of words or phrase the evoke the sensations of sight, hearing, touch, smell, or taste. Examples:

Onomatopoeia Words whose sounds suggests their meaning. Examples:
“The moan of doves in immemorial elms, and murmuring of innumerable bees.”

Personification Giving human qualitles to something not human.
Examples: “As she song softy at the evil face of the full moon.”

Protagonist Is the main character in the story. Examples:
Batman, Superman

Antagonist a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent; adversary. Examples: The joker is the antagonist in batman The green goblin is the antagonist In spiderman.

Flashback Is a memory or a dream. Examples:
I still remember the juicy main goal when I was little. I remember the lunch that my mom just to do when I was small.

Foreshadowing Is the way an author puts in clues as to how plot is going to develop. Examples:
