2. How it works:
Each person in your group will be responsible for ONE of the Five rotating jobs for chapters 7 and 9.
Each chapter will be a NEW job
You will be presenting your work to your group members every second day to further understanding
You will be assessed at the end of the chapters

3. Summarizer
Summarizer: One person will be responsible for writing a 2 page double spaced summary of the assigned reading. Be sure to include any information that relates to the big ideas we are discussing in class such as leadership or the Golding vs Rousseau philosophies. Choose your details wisely. The group may choose to add any important details that were not included. This MUST be in your own words and written well. I will be looking for correct use of conventions, sentence structure, organization, etc as well as your ideas. OR create a graphic novel for this chapter using

4. Questioner
Questioner: One person will be responsible for posing five thoughtful questions relating to the assigned chapter and the answers on a powerpoint or keynote. Thoughtful questions are literary, philosophical or sociological in nature. They are deep questions. Ask why something may have happened, what contributed to a change in character, what they think may happen next, etc. It is also this person’s job to encourage others to respond to the questions and guide the ensuing discussion. Include the answers under the question on the same slide and include an image to reinforce your ideas

5. Why do you think Ralph is slowing losing his power, whereas Jack seems to be gaining it?
Maybe because the way Jack leads is much more adventurous. He wants to do fun and spontaneous things. Jack finally takes a stand for himself and Ralph wasn't ready for it. The littluns are probably tired of the rules and as little kids, they just want to run around and play. Jack's tribe is becoming the fun side whereas Ralph's side is becoming the logic and reason side. So the freedom and fun appeals more to most of the children.

6. Literary enhancer
Literary Enhancer: One person will be responsible for drawing the group’s attention to the author’s use of language and literary devices. The literary enhancer will choose passages where the author uses vivid descriptive language or imagery, where the author creates a specific mood, uses foreshadowing or other literary devices such as metaphor, simile, hyperboles, etc and present these to the group on a powerpoint or keynote presentation. It is also part of this person’s job to comment on the effect the use of language has on the reader (such as create a mood or tone or reinforces a theme) and elicit group member’s responses to this information.

7. “He was happy and wore the damp darkness of the forest like his old clothes” (page 60)
Golding used a simile in this sentence to show how confident Jack is with nature and the forest, which is leading him to becoming more of a savage. He is symbolically becoming like a predator, only focussing on the hunt.

8. “Up there, for once, were clouds, great bulging towers that sprouted away over the island, grey and cream and copper- coloured” (page 51)
The metaphor of the clouds being towers was used to express a dark eerie, tone. This foreshadows that something odd or creepy might happen because the mood has been set.

9. “Soon the darkness was full of claws, full of the awful unknown and menace.” (page 52)
The effect of the language used in this quote is to set the tone. He makes the darkness seem scary and beastly. Just like the “beastie” these boys are afraid of. Golding wants to convey a dark, scary tone so he uses words that create tension and fear.

10. “Sucks to your Assmar” (page 40)
Golding uses the boys slang, their informal language to contrast with the eloquence of Goldings narrative and descriptive style. Note he uses sophisticated language and sensory language to describe the Island in contrast to the innocence and savagery of the boys.

11. Creative Extension
Creative extension: One person will be responsible for creating a creative extension based on the assigned reading. A creative extension could be a drawing/painting/collage of a vivid scene in the reading, a poem based on a character’s words or moods from the reading, a letter from one character to another, a journal entry written by one of the characters, a newspaper article or editorial describing the events taking place in the novel or…. ?

12. Character Development in a Timeline
Create a timeline on a piece of 11x17 paper. Include the most relevant plot details from chapter 1-7. (max 2 per chapter)
Choose one of the characters plot their development on the timeline. Use direct characterization and indirect characterization examples to show personality traits and relevant physical details.
Include at least 5 character traits with quotes or evidence to back it up
Include the development of the character as well. Are they changing? How do they relate to the other boys? How are they changing? If at all?
What do they symbolize? At the end of the document or poster, be sure to include the reasoning behind Goldings descriptions. Eg. Why do you think Golding made Piggy overweight and asthmatic?

13. Leadership
Referring to the characteristics of a leader that we discussed earlier in class AND the idea that Machiavelli thought a “Good leader should lead with fear, not love because humans are wretched creatures”, who is showing the best leadership?
For either Ralph or Jack, find examples and quotes of their leadership qualities whether they are implied or explicit. What do they do? What are their ideas? How do they treat others? How do they deal with the fear?
How should you show your understanding? A chart? A mind map? Quote balloons over a sketch? Cartoon?
