Abraham Lincoln: Was the first Republican elected president during this time. After Lincoln was elected, the southern states began to leave the Union (United States). Lincoln also argued that secession was illegal because the Constitution stood for the collective will of the people and could not be destroyed by the state legislation. Lincoln’s main goal during the Civil War was to preserve the Union, not to end the slavery.

During the Crimean War, she and a team of nurses improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base hospital, reducing the death count by two-thirds. Her writings sparked worldwide health care reform. Thousands of women were recruited from the North and South and joined the volunteer brigades and signed up to work as nurses. They cared for the sick and injured soldiers. This was the first time in American history that women played a significant role in the war efforts.
