Describe the storm – what is coming? What do people sense about it? Why do people keep thinking about boyhood/youth? -first carnival image of temptation -woman in ice –represents temptation/sin *wanting what you can not have * DESIRE Who sees the block of ice? Charles Halloway Tom Fury Iron pieces- signs and symbols throughout history that made people believe that they are safe Halloway Family – not very close, but they seem content and complete mother – happy and caring father – dissatisfied and unhappy at home *at the library??? Nightshade Family – just Jim and his mother mother – sad and has had a tough life/worries about Jim leaving father – took off and is not around siblings - died

3 Carnival – three inconsistencies with the carnival
*Oct 24th (usually end after Labor Day) *3 AM - calliope music at night (usually arrive at dawn) body’s at low tide soul is out blood moves slow; nearest death you’ll ever be save dying (hospitals) *silence (usually noisy hustle and bustle) (personification – skeleton canvas skin=human strength/(it’s alive) Balloon!?!? Mirror maze - waiting Train – whistle “protests of a billion people dead or dying” -calliope church music, no one playing -BALLOON?? -imagery – spider, water
