Nucleic Acids: DNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) – nucleic acid that stores & transmits genetic information from one generation of an organism to the next by coding for the production of a cell’s proteins This is the first ever scanning electron microscope image of a strand of DNA, and it shows the structure of the minuscule string of molecules that encodes all life. It’s tiny — that little scale bar in the bottom right corner measures just 20 nanometres — but it definitely shows the characteristic double helix that makes DNA iconic. Those red arrows point out the spacing between the strands as they twirl around the axis. They’re separated by just 2.7 nanometres. Watson and Crick must be proud. 6/1/2018 Organic Compounds: Nucleic Acids
