2 Objectives Define Proficiency Testing (PT) Define devolution
Within the 10 min, we will define what is PT, DETAIL THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN A pt SCHEME, UNDERSTAND THE PT PROCESS. Try and define a few terminologies. Take the game higher by looking for performance indicators beyond the conventional indicators i.e. accuracy and precision. Conclude by looking at ways of using PT reports for CQI. Define Proficiency Testing (PT) Define devolution Objectives of PT PT process The counties Penetration of EQA services in counties Use of HuQAS PT reports for improvement

3 Definition of PT To understand definition of PT as per the CLSI guideline “A program in which multiple samples are periodically sent to members of a group of laboratories for analysis and/or identification; whereby each laboratory’s results are compared with those of other laboratories in the group and/or with an assigned value, and reported to the participating laboratories and others.” CLSI GP27- A2 27:8

4 Definition of Devolution

5 Objectives of PT Why participate in a PT scheme? We know one of the challenges in laboratory testing is the timely identification of errors as a result of equipment , reagents and/or personnel. PT comes in handy to help in detection of equipment errors that ultimately lead to equipment failures and costly repairs, benefits of purchasing quality reagents and identifying staff training needs hence staff development. Pt helps in montoring the performance of the lab and through this, testing areas that needs improvement can be identified. Satisfactory performance in PT instill cofidence in all clients of the lab. The sfaff are confident that the results they generate and issue to the doctors are accurate precise and reliable, the mgt are confident that reliable results are guiding dx and patient management. The patients are assured that the testing process is in check. And its also a demonstration of competency to regulation and accreditation bodies. Pt leads to standardization and acceptance of lab results at different testing sites hence no need of repeat testing therefore reducing cost of healthcare. Helps in timely detection of equipment failures, identifying reagent problems, reviewing staff training. Maintaining and Improving inter-laboratory agreement and raising standards. Instills Confidence in Management, Staff, and patients as well as demonstrating competency to accreditation bodies. Improving inter-laboratory agreement and raising standards.

8 EQA PENETRATION IN COUNTIES

9 PRIVATE VS PUBLIC/ OTHERS
This is a graphical plot that The lab can use to easily track their performance compared to the evaluation criteria target. The solid line labelled zero represents the evaluation criteria target. The dashed lines labelled +7 and -7 represent the acceptable limits for the analyte. Having a long-term view of many test events allows the lab to visualise trends and shifts within the results for any given analyte. This is helpful in determining the type of action (if any) to be taken to achieve a bias % of 0. 2013 Test events 2014 Test events

10 Why HuQAS PT ? Allows comparison of performance and results among different test sites and with peers. Provides early warning for systematic problems associated with kits, equipment and operations Provides objective evidence of testing quality Indicates areas that need improvement Identifies staff training needs. It’s a prerequisite for laboratory accreditation
